Celebrating a Milestone: Ancaster Mill Race Turns 35!

May 4, 2018
Aomr 35th anniversary 2

For the 35th consecutive year, hundreds of runners from surrounding areas – and as far away as Kenya – will push themselves to their physical limits as participants in the Ancaster Mill Race. More than just an athletic competition, the family-friendly event has become a staple in the community's calendar and always draws huge crowds.

Taking place on Tuesday, June 5th 2018 at the Morgan Firestone Arena, the 5k and 10k courses are a challenge at all levels as they traverse along the infamous 'Jerseyville Hill.' The event features 3 race classes:

  • Kids 1k Race: 6:30pm start
  • 5k Race: 7:00pm start
  • 10k Race: 7:00pm start

Proceeds from the race go to Ancaster Community Services (ACS). ACS is the only social services agency in Ancaster offering programs such as: emergency food assistance (food bank), seniors programs (Meals on Wheels, Volunteer Driving, Frozen Meals), volunteer opportunities, youth programs (Youth Employment, Babysitting Course), and are a local source of community information, tourism, counselling services and referrals.

Dating back to 1983, the race's inaugural year saw 260 eager runners take part. This year, the Ancaster Mill Race expects to welcome over 700 participants. Ancaster Mill has proudly sponsored the race since its inception and is generously donating a $3,500 purse to the top winners. As in past years, it will also provide the post-race meal, prepared and distributed by a spirited fleet of volunteer staff members.

Mary Lou Ciancone has taken a lead role in the event since the passing of her husband, co-founder Ron Ciancone, two years ago. She, along with the owners of Runner's Den, have invited past winners, dignitaries, longstanding supporters and sponsors to join them for a special Media Day at Ancaster Mill on May 22nd. The afternoon will be spent reminiscing over scrapbook clippings, photo slideshows and past race highlights, all while promoting the importance of this year's milestone race.

A true community event – one described more as a street party than a traditional race – the Ancaster Mill Race is thrilled to celebrate 35 years of community involvement and welcomes new and familiar faces. Registration is still open for runners and volunteers are always appreciated. For more information, visit ancastermillrace.com.
